Thomas Aldrich was an American poet, novelist, traveler and editor. By the time An Old Town by the Sea was published Bailey had acquired celebrity status in his hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Along with his book "The Story of a Real Boy" Bailey paints a picturesque image of his hometown and the house his Grandfather lived in.
