Gaskell saw and wrote about the problems caused by the gulf between the social classes. She fought for tolerance and better labor conditions. The Poor Clare is an 1856 gothic ghost story told in a series of narratives. Bridget, the grandmother, invoked a phantom who is now haunting the pure and innocent Lucy. The story is full of intergenerational secrets.
